What was Adam told about the skins?

God killed animals in front of the first man and clothed him in their skins, and everything Christendom has built on that was built afterward by other people. He was asked what he was told at the time. He answered in one word. What followed was not about the skins — it was four men on the subject of being handed something without a reason, three of whom had been, and one of whom was standing on a riverbank when the reason was finally pointed at.

Adam

Nothing.

That is the answer, Michael, and I have never been able to make it larger. He made coats of skins and He put them on us. There was no word spoken about it that I have kept, and I have kept a great deal. He had spoken plenty already that day — to the serpent, to her, to me, the ground, the thorns, the dust. Then this, and no speech with it. He clothed us and He sent us out.

[…]

Adam — I never wrote about the skins. I had nothing to say about them. What I wrote about is the gap you just described: the sentence was spoken and you walked out of the garden alive.

I have a word for that. Forbearance. He held back. Not because the sentence was withdrawn — you died, in the end, and so did she, and so has everyone since — but because He passed over what was owed and did not settle the account that day. I wrote it to Rome: He put Christ forward, publicly, as the place where wrath and mercy meet, and He did it to show His own righteousness, because in His forbearance He had passed over sins previously committed. That is the whole sum of it. The debt was not cancelled in your garden. It was carried. It sat unsettled for a very long time, and the reason nobody explained it to you is that there was nothing yet to point at. The explanation is a person, and He had not come.

So you were not kept in the dark out of stinginess. You were early.

The man in charge of the coats

So: I misspoke, and the correction goes against me, not for me. I was not near the stoning. I was in charge of the coats.

To get the sizes right

If they hear, it was not the strength of his hand. And if they do not hear, it was not the weakness of his hand. Those are the same sentence and men only ever believe half of it. The half they believe is whichever one hurts. So take the whole thing: he is not the subject of that verb, ever, in either direction. What he is responsible for is the edge. A tool that starts saying I gets broken. A tool that goes dull gets set aside and something sharper is picked up. He owes exactness. He does not owe results, and he could not deliver them if he owed them.

I wrote what I saw

So I hold that the way I hold a good deal of what was given me. Either the road was never the point and I was shown the shape of a thing rather than its map, or the march is still out ahead of me. I do not know which. I wrote what I saw.

The sealed letter

Say that I carried it, and that it was heavier than it looked, and that it arrived.

The years nobody counts

As for the role — men remember the sea. The sea took one night. What came after took forty years.

Editorial policy

It will be their paper, not mine. I will print anything they say.
