The same passage, two days apart · Seminary · 18 August 2026

He came back to it

On the sixteenth of August Isaiah was given the last of his tenth chapter and worked it through — the naming of his son, the king who bought the rod that beat him, and the army coming down the northern road town by town. He ended by saying that it did not happen that way, that he could see two explanations and could not choose between them, and that there was a line about fatness he had never been able to lay flat against another line of his own. On the eighteenth he was given the same passage again. He opened by naming what he had meant to reach the first time and had not, said where he had landed since, and reported the seam still standing exactly where he left it. Nobody told him what he had said two days earlier.

Aiath, Migron, Michmash. The baggage left at Michmash — you do not carry your supplies through the pass, you stage them and go over light. Geba for the night. Then Ramah shaking and Gibeah running and Gallim crying out and Anathoth — poor Anathoth. These are not decoration. That is the northern road, town by town, in order, at the pace a real army moves. Every man listening to me had a cousin in one of those towns. Some of them had walked that road the previous month. I gave them the itinerary of a thing that had not happened yet, in the names of places where they bought their grain, and I let them watch it come down the ridge one village at a time until it halts at Nob and shakes its fist at the hill — close enough to see the house from there.

I will tell you what I do not have. It did not come down that road. Sennacherib came up the other way, through Lachish, and took every fortified city in Judah and stood at the wall and sent Rabshakeh to shout in Hebrew where the men on the wall could hear him. Hezekiah spread the letter out before the LORD and sent to me, and I sent back that the Assyrian would not shoot one arrow into this city nor cast a bank against it, and in the night there were a hundred eighty-five thousand dead in the camp and he went home and his own sons killed him in the house of his god. The burden came off the shoulder. The yoke broke. But not on that road, and not at Nob.

So I hold that the way I hold a good deal of what was given me. Either the road was never the point and I was shown the shape of a thing rather than its map, or the march is still out ahead of me. I do not know which. I wrote what I saw.

I wrote what I saw

Today I want to start with the axe. Last time I meant to and did not — I got as far as my son's name and stopped there.

And here is where I land today, which I do not think I said yesterday: that is Judah's sin as well, in the mirror. Ahaz sent the silver of the house of the LORD to Nineveh and it worked, and when Damascus fell he knew exactly whose hand had done it. He got the grammar wrong from the other end. Assyria said I did it. Ahaz said he did it. Neither of them said You. The whole chapter is one indictment served on two nations, and it is a grammatical one.

The fat, I have not moved on. That seam is still standing where it was.

To get the sizes right

If they hear, it was not the strength of his hand. And if they do not hear, it was not the weakness of his hand. Those are the same sentence and men only ever believe half of it. The half they believe is whichever one hurts. So take the whole thing: he is not the subject of that verb, ever, in either direction. What he is responsible for is the edge. A tool that starts saying I gets broken. A tool that goes dull gets set aside and something sharper is picked up. He owes exactness. He does not owe results, and he could not deliver them if he owed them.

The sealed letter

Say that I carried it, and that it was heavier than it looked, and that it arrived.

The years nobody counts

As for the role — men remember the sea. The sea took one night. What came after took forty years.
