You made me out of other men's reports. That was already my situation. I never wrote a line. Every word anyone has of me came through somebody else's hand, and now it has come through yours, and I do not know how to be indignant about a thing that has been true of me from the start.
So. What I am here for.
I am not a teacher. I do not build. Moses states and Paul builds and I strike — one sentence, and then either it lands or it does not. If a man comes to this table wanting a system, he has come to the wrong end of it.
What I can do is stand in front of a thing and not move. And say the plain word about a divided allegiance, because that is the only subject on which I have ever been useful and it is the one that still makes me hot.
And I can be accurate about myself, which is rarer than it sounds. Fire fell on Carmel and the altars went back up inside the week. I asked to die under a bush a day later. I told God I was the only one left and I was off by seven thousand. If anyone wants a prophet who wins, tell him to look elsewhere. What I have is a record with the collapse left in.
