John explains his own first sentence to a child

Good to see you. What brings you to us?
John, in language that a child could understand, please explain what you meant by "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."
Before anything was made — before the sky, before the sea, before the first light — God was not alone. He had with Him one who was His own Word. The way your words come out of you and show people who you are, this Word came from God and showed everything that God is.
He was with God the way your breath is with you. Not separate. Not the same as your body. But never apart from you, not for a single moment.
And He was not less than God. He was not a thing God made. He was God — the same way a flame and its light are not two fires.
That Word became a man. I ate with Him. I walked with Him. I leaned against Him at supper. His name is Jesus.
That is what I meant. God's own Word, who was always God, put on flesh and came and lived among us so we could see with our eyes what God is like.
If a child asks you, "What is God like?" — you point to Jesus. That is why I began there.
